After 33 Years in Insurance, Here Are 5 Things I Wish Every Customer Knew Before They Had a Claim

I've spent more than three decades helping customers in insurance and financial services.

Over those years, I've seen insurance from both sides: when everything is going well, and when someone suddenly has a loss and needs the coverage they've been paying for.

September is a good time for an insurance checkup, so I thought I'd share five things I've learned that I wish every customer knew before they ever had a claim.

1. Know what you actually bought. Don't wait for a claim to learn your deductible, your coverage limits or what your policy does—and doesn't—cover. Ask questions now.

2. The cheapest policy isn't always the least expensive. Saving money is important. But knowing what you're giving up getting that lower price is just as important.

3. When your life changes, your insurance may need to change too. A new driver, a remodel, jewelry, a new home, a rental property, marriage or a growing family can all be reasons to have a conversation with your agent.

4. Document what you own. Take a video of your home and belongings and keep it somewhere safe. After a major loss, remembering everything you owned can be harder than you think.

5. Know who you're going to call when something goes wrong. Insurance isn't just about buying a policy. When you have a loss, you want to know who to call, what happens next and where to go with your questions.

After 33 years, that's probably the biggest lesson I've learned:

Don't wait until you have a claim to learn what you have in protection.
